Renovation of Grad castle

Arrea / 2018
LOCATION: Grad 191, 9264 Grad

Architects have been working on the largest castle in Slovenia for a whole decade. First they restored five rooms in the eastern wing where guests can spend a night. The round tower and a hall were furnished and the arcade corridor renovated. Modern furnishings recreate the atmosphere of castle rooms, while oak furniture brings cosiness to the common rooms. Several years later, natural science exhibitions Upkač and Kukavica were installed in the south wing. Last year, as part of the exhibition on the history of the castle “Three Castles, Two Lands, One Story”, the neighbouring vaulted castle chapel was also renovated.

Due to the lack of public funds for a complete renovation, it was gradually accepted that new life can nevertheless be brought to the castle. The management of the regional park, located in the building, strives to collect funds for its maintenance and partial renovation, while at the same time bringing art installations to the yet unrestored rooms. This is perhaps the best way to tell the story of life and solitude of this beautiful building.
